Authorities reported the arrest of a male suspect following an alleged assault on a female, subsequent abduction, and a police pursuit resulting in a vehicle crash and fire.

At approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a violent domestic incident involving a male and a female at the intersection of Plank Road and the Harrison Crossing shopping center. Witnesses observed the altercation, which resulted in injuries to the female.

Initially stopping at the intersection, the vehicle sped off with the female reportedly screaming inside, prompting deputies to initiate a pursuit. The chase continued for several miles until the vehicle lost control and crashed near Orange Plank Road and Brock Road.

Deputies successfully rescued the female victim and apprehended the male suspect. However, following his arrest, the suspect reportedly spat at a detective assisting the deputies.

The vehicle involved in the incident caught fire as a result of the crash and was completely destroyed.

William Alexander Chandler, 36, of Spotsylvania, faces multiple charges, including felony eluding, violation of an Emergency Protective Order, assault on law enforcement, domestic assault, abduction by force, malicious wounding, obstruction of justice by flight, obstruction of justice without force, and driving with a suspended license and no insurance. Chandler is currently being held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Authorities urge individuals experiencing domestic violence to seek assistance from resources such as Empowerhouse, with whom the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies in the area collaborate to support those in need.
